Who We Are

About Carrabassett Coffee

Carrabassett Coffee Company Building in Kingfield, Maine.

Carrabassett Coffee Company is located in the charming little village of Kingfield, Maine just down the road from Sugarloaf ski resort. The sparkling Carrabassett River runs through the middle of town and we wouldn’t want to live or work any place else.

Carrabassett Coffee is a small-batch specialty roaster. We offer wholesale, mail order and retail. We roast only the highest grade beans and offer what we feel are the finest single origin coffees available.

We have developed our own specialty blends that have drawn rave reviews from discerning coffee drinkers. Our decafs and organics are wonderful, and our flavored coffees use only premium beans.

A small business, we operate with only approximately 20 people on staff. We believe in doing a lot the old-fashioned way, like grinding to order, hand-labeling our bags, and giving each individual order the level of care and attention we feel it deserves.

Our History

Our original owner, Tom Hildrith, “burned” his first batch of beans on New Year’s Eve 1995, starting the journey that would lead to the really good coffee you all know and love today. Since that first batch, we have dialed-in the perfect roasts for each coffee we offer, from Sunrise Blend: our lightest and brightest coffee, all the way to Backdraft: our darkest and smokiest (but never burnt!) coffee.

We’ve been roasting in small batches since our founding, and we don’t plan to stop. We roast our coffee five days a week, so that it’s always fresh and flavorful.

Carrabassett Coffee Company operated out of a small building in downtown Kingfield in our formative years of business, until 2014, when our current roastery was built on the river side of Route 27 on the edge of Kingfield. This expanded space allowed us to increase production, while still maintaining the values of our small business and small-town community.

Our owner, Bob Luce, and his longtime friend, Rob Miller, purchased the company in 2017. Rob Miller, also known as Sparky, passed unexpectedly in May of 2019. Our popular coffee Sparky’s Blend is named in his honor, and a portion of the sales price for each pound of Sparky’s Blend sold is donated to local organizations, which change quarterly. Bob Luce is an area local who works with us on-site, focusing his love of coffee into expanding our business, while maintaining our roots.

In June of 2022, we installed 92 solar panels on the roof of our roastery building, which power approximately 90% of Carrabassett Coffee Company’s electrical needs.

In April of 2024, we began an expansion of our current building, in order to make space for a slightly larger coffee roaster, and increase the efficiency of our production floor.

Our Values

Here at Carrabassett Coffee Company, we strive to be customer focused,  reliable, flexible and passionate for Carrabassett Coffee, with an emphasis on teamwork. Our company’s purpose is to provide opportunity and positively impact people.

Our Art

Over the years, many have commented on the unique and individual art on our coffee bags. Almost all of these colorful and expressive designs were created by local artist, Claudia Diller. We are proud to be able to showcase her eclectic style. You can find Claudia’s art for sale at her website.

The art for Sparky’s Blend was created by Rob Miller (Sparky)’s daughter, Caitlin Miller.

I got Carrabassett Coffee as a gift and now I am a customer! The coffee is so good! They have a ton of different kinds to choose from and they have amazing customer service. I am in Utah and they ship quick so I don’t worry about running out!
“Drink good coffee”

Brian Y

Phenomenal. Not only did this ship super quick, but the ground coffee was as fresh as if I was in the actual store. Shipping from Maine to Colorado in only a matter of days is much appreciated and will continue to support this store by making online purchases until I’m able to head back east and visit in person!

Kimberly T

The only coffee we will drink now, nothing else compares! It all started at the Woodsman and then we stopped in to get a bag to take home… now we order monthly! Coconut Cream, Jamaican Me Crazy, Maple Walnut, Blueberry Cobbler… all amazing!

Jill M

I have been a customer since 2013. Since finding Carrabassett I haven’t bought any other coffee. The Back Draft is the best I have ever had. The staff is incredibly helpful and when asked for recommendations are spot on.
I’m so glad the business has grown and more people know about them.

Julia S

Great coffee, very reasonably priced when you realize most brands switched to 12 Oz packages. These guys still do the full pound.
